SAT

Overview

  • Created by the College Board, the SAT is a globally recognized entrance exam used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions.
  • It is developed and administered on behalf of the College Board by the Educational Testing Service.
  • Most students take the SAT during their junior or senior year of high school, and almost all colleges and universities in the United States use the SAT to make admission decisions.
  • The SAT scores are valid over a period of 5 years.


Test Format & Structure

Test format

SAT can be divided into three major categories of Mathematics, Critical Reading, and Writing. Each major section is further divided into three sub categories. There are 10 sub-sections in each major section and the total time for the exam is 3 hours and 45 minutes which generally exceed to 4 hours due to form filling, distribution of material, break for 10 minutes or more.

Test Score & Score Calculations

Test Score

The SAT has three sections – Critical Reading, Math, and Writing. You can earn a scaled score of between 200 and 800 points on each section, for a total of 2400 possible points on the SAT.


Score Calculation

  • Students earn 1 point for each correct answer, lose 1/4 point for each incorrect answer (except on the student-produced response math questions), and neither lose nor gain points for each omitted answer.
  • A student’s raw score for each of the main test sections (Critical Reading, Math, and Writing) is calculated by adding 1 point for each correct answer and subtracting 1/4 point for each incorrect answer (again, except on the student-produced response math questions).
  • A student’s raw score for each of the three main test sections is converted to a scaled score, which ranges between a 200 and an 800, with 800 being the highest possible score. Because the essay factors into a student’s Writing scaled score, the score conversion for the Writing section is a bit more complex.
  • A student’s total SAT score is the total of the student’s scaled scores for the three main test sections.


Test Duration

The total time for the exam is 3 hours and 45 minutes which generally exceed to 4 hours due to form filling, distribution of material, break for 10 minutes or more.

  • Writing: 60 minutes
